Now it's time to look for something to wear for you and your partner. You want to feel amazing in your engagement photo session but having a hard time? I know the stress with wedding planning. I've been there. With my wedding, I didn't have a wedding planner (in some cases, it's best to have one) and I did mostly everything DIY , from the centerpieces to wedding guestbook (we made a wood frame that we hung up on the wall in our living room) where people signed using a sharpie marker, to my floral arrangements. My grandmother did floral arrangements for weddings back in the 80's and the 90's. I'm forever thankful to have that tradition for my wedding that my grandmother did for me. I did help her with the floral arrangements as well. It's my job to help you feel amazing about the shoot and the photos from the shoot.
I set the wardrobe together to help the outfit decision a little more easy and breezy. Whether you have a fall engagement shoot, a winter engagement shoot, a spring or summer shoot, we’ll help you decide what you need to look and feel your best. One of the best tips for the wardrobe is to be comfortable like scratchy fabric. or baggy clothes. You need to feel like you can move and stand naturally and not worrying about constantly fixing your top or dress or wishing you had shoes you could walk in.
Color + Style + Comfort = The perfect photoshoot outfit
Ten outfits that look great for engagement photos
A white dress always looks great.
Have a great casual outfit to change into.
Wear a long flowy dress!
Neutral outfits look great for shoots in natural locations.
Flannel. I love flannel styles in the fall time.
Extra props. Wear a hat, sunglasses, blanket or anything else. If you play the guitar throw it in the truck. Let’s go!
Boots. Cowboy boots, fancy boots, high heeled boots, all of them; throw them in the bag. ( I don’t recommend work boots.)
Speaking of jackets; jean texture and leather (of any color) are SO CHIC. They really add to the whole look. Jean jackets can really dress down a dress and leather jackets can add a little pizazz.
I guess this isn’t something you wear… but it is still a very important aspect of your photo! Bring the little fur balls and add your “whole family” into the photos!
Be bold. Go ahead and embrace that crazy style, special occasion dress (even last year's Easter dress!), or that color you've been wanting to debut! It's time to express yourself and have fun with fashion!
a few more tips…
Come in your first outfit. It saves you time versus changing into two outfits on location.
Remember that y’all can wear the same pants twice. You don’t need to change into three shades of jeans unless you really want to, boys.
Location. Pick a location that really speaks to you.
How to choose what to wear for engagement photos
#1 – Consider The Location. The first tip is a pretty obvious one, but definitely the best tip I can give you for your engagement session. You don’t want to be all glammed up in a ballgown-style dress if your photoshoot is taking place at the top of a mountain, you know? My advice? I always recommend asking your photographer before deciding what to wear for engagement photos. I’ve been through it with my clients and can tell you what will or won’t work at a certain location.
#2 – What’s Your Engagement Photoshoot Theme? Do
#3 – Bring Extra Outfits. Bringing multiple outfits to your engagement session allows us to find the best looks for the location and create a variety of shots that reflect your style and the setting.
#4 – Don’t Forget The Accessories. Some outfits look great without accessories, but some look absolutely AWESOME with that little extra something added in. Accessories like hats and sunglasses can add a fun and casual touch to a photoshoot, helping to create a unique and memorable look.
#5 – Bring In Some Color. Minimal tone and neutral color outfits look great on couples whose photoshoots take place in a natural location, but having a pop of color never hurts either. (rewrite another sentence like this first setence)If you’re having trouble figuring out what to wear for engagement photos, lean on your wedding photographer.
#6 – Check The Weather Forecast. Consider breathable fabrics and light colors for summer, and layers for cooler weather, while also avoiding outfits that show sweat patches. Even it has few rain showers, I have a cute little clear umbrella to use for the session.
#7 – Comfortable Engagement Outfits Work! For your engagement photos, prioritize comfort as a key factor in choosing your outfit, ensuring you feel confident and relaxed, which will translate positively into your photos. Your engagement photos should reflect you as a couple.
What to be careful of for engagement photos
#1 – Something You’re Not Comfortable With. I mentioned this above, but I’d like to highlight it again. Your outfit should reflect you. If it doesn’t, don’t wear it! And definitely don’t feel pressured by trends or other things like that. You do you.
#2 – Something A Little Too Risqué. Some themes can work really well for engagement shoots, especially if they’re fun and perfectly reflect your personality. For instance, a cowboy hat and boots can look awesome. But there are some themes that have the potential to ruin your images, especially if they’re a little bit adventurous or over the top. To maintain a classy, editorial-style engagement photo shoot, avoid overdoing a theme with provocative or seductive outfits; focus on outfits that complement the location and your personal style, ensuring the photos remain elegant and timeless.
#3 – Patterns. For your engagement shoot, it's generally best to avoid outfits with clashing or overly busy patterns, as they can distract from the focus on you and your partner.
#4 – An Outfit That Doesn’t Match Your Skin Tone. You might’ve already considered this, but there are definitely some outfit colors that will not work with your skin tone.
#5 – Something You’ll Never Wear Again. To get the most value out of your engagement photoshoot outfit, choose something you'll enjoy wearing again, maximizing the investment and ensuring you feel confident and comfortable in your photos
Here are top 5 don’ts
Neon colors because they will cast a hue on your face.
Too might bright red because it doesn't usually show well in photos.
No match-matchy (we're not living in the 90's..)
Don't Overdo Patterns. While subtle patterns can add texture, avoid overly busy or clashing patterns that can distract from the photos.
Don't wear work boots to the session. (For the fellas.)
